Regent Professor Leads High Level Security Training for Defense Fellows in the Indo-Pacific Region

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (Mar. 28, 2023) – Dr. Joshua Hastey, from the Robertson School of Government, is back at Regent after successfully leading a seminar in the most recent Comprehensive Security Cooperation (CSC) course for military, government, and civilian personnel in Honolulu, Hawaii. Fellows are drawn from the security communities of the United States and its partners around the Indo-Pacific region.

The CSC course is a 5-week in-resident executive program offered three times a year for professionals who intersect with the security sphere. Courses are held at the Daniel K Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies (APCSS), where leaders from the Indo-Pacific regularly gather to address regional and global security.

Dr. Hastey is the first seminar leader selected from outside of the APCSS faculty or alumni network. His experience teaching and writing on the security dynamics of the Indo-Pacific, and teaching security practitioners at Regent University, made him a natural fit with the APCSS faculty.

Eighty-one Fellows representing more than 22 countries from the Indo-Pacific graduated from this latest program on March 22. The coursework enables its graduates to develop resilient solutions to real organizational and regional security issues.

“The CSC brings together Fellows who might never get to interact with each other and, though intensive lectures, seminars, and cohort-building activities, transforms them into a lifelong alumni network,” said Dr. Joshua Hastey, professor in the Robertson School of Government at Regent. “I was thrilled to represent Regent University and the Irregular Warfare Center as we connected these impressive security professionals with each other and expanded their already impressive skillsets.”

The program also gives attendees the opportunity to assess security environments, identify disruptors, analyze threat systems, and probe governance issues while collaboratively building relationships and mutual understanding.

The Irregular Warfare Center (IWC), a central mechanism for developing the Department of Defense’s irregular warfare knowledge and contributor at this latest CSC session, placed great emphasis on the value of allies and partners.

“Dr. Hastey’s level of awareness of the region’s security issues allows him to provide the guidance and expertise that safeguards the readiness of graduates,” said Lori Leffler, Chief of Staff, Irregular Warfare Center. “This 5-week experience expands the knowledge base of graduates, but it also strengthens the security culture by building lasting connections between APCSS, IWC, and Regent University.”
