Regent University’s adjunct professors are rigorously selected so that they help students grow in knowledge and faith. These professors, who teach on a contractual basis, must be dedicated to Christ-centered teaching and learning; have a record of or potential for academic scholarship; possess the ability to teach undergraduate-level and/or graduate-level courses, and embrace Regent’s Identity and Mission statements and subscribe to a statement of Christian faith.
Bio
Ingo Tophoven was born and raised in Krefeld-Uerdingen, Germany. After his German Abitur and serving 20 months of civil service, Dr. Tophoven left Germany to study in the United States. He graduated with a B.A. (double major) in English Literature and Psychology (1991) from Evangel University and received a M.A. in counseling from Regent University (1996). Dr. Tophoven finished a Ph.D. in counselor education and supervision from Regent in 2014.
Within the last 20 years, Dr. Tophoven has directed a large church-based counseling center in McAllen, Texas, founded a private practice, senior-pastored two churches, and co-produced a live call-in radio show on faith and counseling issues. From 2008 until 2017 the Tophoven family lived and worked in Berlin, Germany, as bi-vocational counseling, coaching and consulting missionaries with New Mission Systems International (www.nmsi.org) serving pastors and missionaries in the greater Berlin community and online reaching missionaries and pastors in Europe, the middle-East, North-America, South-America, and Asia. In July 2017, Dr. Tophoven joined the Regent University faculty to teach in the new counseling ministries department and lead the ongoing development of the department’s three graduate programs (M.A. in Human Services, M.A. in Pastoral Counseling, Ph.D. in Counseling and Psychological Studies) as department chair.
Dr. Tophoven’s research interests include bi-cultural marriages, longevity in marriage, sexual health in the church, pastor health and burnout prevention, and all issues pertaining to global mental health and the church. Dr. Tophoven is married to Capri from San Antonio, Texas. Together they have three children: Lukas (21), Katharina (19), and Annika (16).
