How are my federal loans impacted by COVID-19?

With the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) national emergency, the CARES Act was enacted to provide broad economic relief including relief for some federal student loan borrowers. This law provides federal student loan interest to be 0% for qualifying loans beginning March 13, 2020. If your loan qualifies, you do not need to take any action in order to receive this benefit. Your student loan account will be automatically adjusted so that interest does not accrue.

Also, federal student loan borrowers are automatically being placed into administrative forbearance on qualifying loans. This means your payments will be temporarily suspended. The administrative forbearance will be granted effective March 13, 2020. You can still make payments to your federal loans during this time directly through your loan servicer if you choose.

Contact your loan servicer to determine if your loans are eligible. Check out the Federal Student Aid website on Coronavirus for more information and updates including how long this benefit is in effect.

To what payment periods does the Department of Education’s COVID-19 guidance apply?

Previous March 5, 2020 Electronic Announcement guidance from the U.S. Department of Education (ED) applies to students enrolled in payment periods that begin on or before June 1, 2020. The April 3, 2020 Electronic Announcement extends that previous guidance to cover any payment period or term beginning between March 5, 2020 and June 1, 2020.
